It seems so long ago, 28 days, when we left Los Angeles for the ride to the Memorial. 3600 miles later, 45 of them today, and at last we arrived in Washington DC. Our route today took us through rolling hills and farm lands before entering our Nations Capital. The motor support was fantastic and our good friends from Oklahoma, Lt Steve Howell and his boys rolled in and helped out during the last 20 miles. We all went to the FDR Monument where we met with the Virginia Chapter. At 1:45 pm we, 750 strong, headed to the Police Memorial. With our families, friends, supporters and many others waiting we rolled in to their cheers! It was very moving and inspiring to see.

At the arrival ceremony Pat Montuore and Harry Phillips spoke about the accomplishments of the Unity Tour. Craig White presented Craig Floyd with the Engraved Memorial Baton that we carried across the USA. Floyd then gave a moving and rousing speech about all the Great things that the Unity Tour has been able to do in the past 10 years. A $1,000,000 check was presented to the Memorial by Pat Montuore.

Today marks the end of our journey, a journey of Honor, remembering all of our Brother and Sister Officers as we rode across the USA. We could not have made this journey a success without all 12 of us working together as a "Team" in Unity. We also would never have been able to complete this journey without all the support we received from individuals, businesses, fellow Officers and our Families. On behalf of all the 12 members of the Cross Country "Team" we Thank you from the bottom of our hearts...

<img style="DISPLAY: block; We awoke to the threat of showers and 58 degrees. As we rode through the City of Wilmington, DE we were greated by non other than Craig Floyd, Director of the National Law Enforcement Memorial. As we continued on the skies began to darken and about 75 miles into the ride it started raining. Everyone picked up the pace a bit and we rolled into Annapolis at 95 miles for the day.

Nearly 500 riders and support converged in Florham Park for the beginning of the Police Unity Tour including 3 additional members of the Amherst Police Department, Tom Maier, Robert Stephens and David Van Dusen, 60 more riders from California, 200 New Jersey riders and many others from different States.

Before the ride an outdoor breakfast of bagels, coffee, fruit and assorted cereals were served, and it was apparent from the beginning that the hard working members of the Police Unity Tour staff had done an exemplary job. The logistics of putting together an event such as this is a feat in itself. Trying to move 400 cyclists, 50 motors, numerous support vehicles, feeding them all and managing traffic to the point that the Holland Tunnel, NYC was shut down, is a testament to the hard work and effort put into this. We take our hats of to the hard working men and women of the Police Unity Tour.

Our days ride took us to Jersey City to a bridge where on Christmas 2005 two Officers Sean Carson and Robert Nguyen were killed in an accident during a heavy fog. All riders dismounted and removed their helmet as they walked their bikes in silence honoring their fallen comrades.

Our next stop was Ground Zero, site of the World Trade Center buildings where an emotional ceremony was held honoring the 72 Law Enforcement Officers who were killed on 9-11. The ceremony was opened with the National Anthem, bagpipes and a reading of all 72 names. The NYPD bestowed two well deserved awards to Pat Montuore and Harry Phillips honoring their hard work in supporting the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and congratulating them on the 10 year anniversary of the Police Unity Tour.

Later while speaking with Pat Montuore he said he wanted to let everyone know that he “appreciates all the support that the Police Unity Tour has received.” He especially wanted to note that without the support of the Local Cities and Towns we pass through our mission could not be a success.

Shane, Rob, Pat, Fred, Tony, Kevin and Dennis at Ground Zero

Bruce, Nancy, Hiroshi and Jim in New York City

Day #25 Florham Park, N.J.Send Off Ceremony

Candlelight Vigil in Florham Park, New Jersey

Deputy Chief Patrick P. A large number of people attended the event. A 20 man Pipe and Drum band marched in to begin. Speakers included Mayor Frank Tinari and Congressman Mario Biaggi. Craig White presented Pat Montuore with an Engraved Memorial Baton and all members of our team were introduced before the crowd. Pat then gave a heart felt speech.

Later Craig Floyd, Chairman of the National Law Enforcement Memorial gave a tremendous speech about the things that the Police Unity Tour has accomplished over the past 10 years.

The Event was concluded with a moving version of "God Bless the USA" to the people all holding lit candles high is the air.

We are now truly united, 400 strong, in our cause as we depart in the morning for NYC Ground Zero...

Day #24 Allentown, PA to Florham Park, NJ

Easton, PA Police Lt. James R. Reilly was presented with a Memorial Baton by Officer Rob Stober of the Cross Country Team. Easton Officer Jesse Sollman was killed in 2005. Lt. Reilly is going to present the baton to the widow, Carin Sollman.

Today all 12 riders began the final leg of the Cross Country Ride in Allentown, PA. We had Motor support from the Police Unity Tour and the Easton PD. The weather was brisk, 48 degrees, but no one was complaining. This ride was the culmination of a years worth of work, planning and preparation. Every member of this team has trained hard and taken off from work to do this ride. Not one member would want it any other way.

We have undertaken this endeavor for one reason, to honor our fellow Officers, heroes, who have given the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. We all have considered it a true honor to represent the Police Unity Tour in this ride. As we rode into Florham Park we were met by none other than Pat Montoure, Harry Phillips and other Unity Tour members.

Today, the ride finished a tough 74 miles that were filled with many many hills. One hill we hit outside of Easton, PA was a 16% grade for over ½ mile. Rob Stober’s parents supplied food and extended great hospitality to us. As we continued on to our completion our team looked sharp all the way to the finish.

Monday will be a rest day and Tuesday we leave Florham Park to ride to NYC Ground Zero for a Ceremony and then on to Woodbridge, NJ.

A picture of our Team upon arrival in Florham Park, NJ
Our Team as we crossed into New Jersey

We stopped for a Team picture and lunch at Rob Stobers house in New Jersey

All 12 Team members riding into New Jersey

Day #23 Hagerstown, Md to Allentown, Pa

Ceremony in Allentown, PA

Sunrise in Maryland...

Group 1 (Patrick, Dennis, Rob and Kevin) awoke to sunny skies. Today was the last time that the groups would ride separately. Tomorrow we will complete the entire final leg together. Group 1 rode through downtown Hagerstown then headed to the countryside. Rolling hills and green wheat pastures lined the roadway. We stopped at the Pennsylvania border for a picture and found a cement Mason Dixon Line marker. Once we arrived in Pennsylvania, the group was met with one of the toughest hills we have had so far and one in which they could only ride at only 7-8mph. Down hill however was a different story with the group hitting 50 mph! Sgt Hall and Deputy Backensto from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department met us after the border and escorted us through their county. Patrick, Dennis, Rob and Kevin pedaled through historic Gettysburg.

Group 2 (Shane, Fred, Steve and Craig) began riding from east of York and began to get into heavier traffic. On route 30 we had to get off this divided highway and head into uncharted waters. After some GPS work the group was back on track. The group moved along briskly with each team member taking turns in the front. The highlight of the ride was when Group 2 crossed the mighty Susquehanna River. It was beginning to heat up outside when they arrived at the switch point.

Group 3 (Dawn, Tony, Bruce and Nancy) took the final leg. Deputy Kyle Hummel of the Berks County Sheriff’s Office gave us an escort until we were almost to Allentown, PA. The group headed into some beautiful winding roads lined with Oak and Cherry trees. A pretty strong crossing wind came up and it eventually became a head wind. The group worked the pace line to perfection and made great time. Once the riders got into Allentown, Police Officer Joe Iannetta escorted them safely to the Hotel.

Later we held a ceremony at the Allentown Police Headquarters. Chief Roger J. MacLean spoke about our cause and then later was presented with a Engraved Memorial Baton. The Honor Guard for the Allentown PD posted the colors and a wreath was placed at the memorial monument. Captain Schwartz was instrumental in putting together the ceremony. We really appreciate all his work. It was well attended by many members of the Allentown PD.
Today was the final ceremony we are holding before meeting up with all of our other Brother and Sister Officers tomorrow in Florham Park, New Jersey.

<img style="DISPLAY: block; At the Hagerstown, Maryland Police Memorial

Today we began our ride in Staunton Virginia. The first group out consisted of Bruce, Nancy, Tony, Dawn and Scott Bzdak (Culpepper Co Sheriff, VA). The ride was very nice with a slight head wind. Over numerous small rollers the riders went, passing the wonderful Virginia landscape. It was very enjoyable ride.

The second group (Rob, Dennis, Shane, Scott and Kevin) started out in the same small rollers with a slight headwind. Scott rode with them for about 25 miles before heading off to work. We rode right into a huge parade day in Winchester, Va. Luckily the local PD got us into town to switch out groups.

The final group (Craig, Pat, Steve and Fred) headed out and through the big party in Winchester, VA. They actually rode in 3 states. Started in VA went through West VA and finished up in Maryland. They had a great ride with perfect weather.

Later the entire team went to Hagerstown PD for the Memorial service. In attendance we several local Sheriff’s Depts. and Local Police Departments. The ceremony went well and we presented a Memorial Baton to Officer Kendal of the Hagerstown Police Dept. It was our 8th Ceremony thus far.

Tomorrow we head to Allentown, Penn. for our final Ceremony and last day before arriving in Florham Park. Everyone is truly excited and more importantly Honored to be so close to completing this endeavor…

<img style="DISPLAY: block; Group 1 (Craig, Shane, Steve and Fred) rode off onto the route. Unfortunately the GPS put us on I-81 and in a short time we got pulled over by a Virginia State Trooper. No problem, he got us back on track right away. Then we got a flat tire on the Durango which totally destroyed the tire. CHP Officer Tony Lowery aka “AAA with a gun” came to the rescue and changed out the tire. Then the group went on climbing and climbing into the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. The entire group stopped for a picture on the top of a climb with a spectacular view.
The second group (Bruce, Nancy, Dawn and Kevin) headed out towards Roanoke, Va for an afternoon Memorial Ceremony. On the steps of the Roanoke PD we held the ceremony. Nearby was a monument recently erected for Officers killed in this City. In attendance was Chief Gaskins and many other Officers including Lt. Fazio. Lt. Fazio was instrumental in setting up today’s event. A Memorial Baton was presented to Chief Gaskins and then the riders headed out with motor support towards Staunton. With several hills and great downhill’s the group motored along at a great pace.
It was 90 degrees when the final group (Dennis, Pat, Rob and Tony) took off late in the afternoon. Several early hills eventually went into many rollers. This team did a great job in keeping the pace up to beat the setting sun. They rolled into the Hotel at about 7:30pm. At the Hotel waiting were Dennis’s niece Katie Dempsey and Graeme Leiser (soon to to married) to cheer for the group. Scott Bzdak of the Culpepper County Sheriff Office in Virginia was also on hand and will be riding with us tomorrow. Scott will be doing his 1st Unity Tour next week. Later we all sat down and enjoyed some pizza on the pool patio.

<img style="DISPLAY: block; It turned out to be a wonderful day, sunny skies, little or no wind and the scenery was awesome. Gentle rollers and some long down hills came and went. Pat was heard to say after the ride “it may have been our best day yet”

Group 2 (Tony, Craig, Fred and Steve) started off with a few nice down hill runs. Shane was traded to another Team for the day. We all stopped at the Virginia border for a picture; however no “Welcome to Virginia” sign could be found. It was a very nice ride to the end.

Group 3 (Bruce, Nancy, Shane and Dawn) started out under sunny skies with a slight crossing breeze. Our route took us into Virginia along RT#11 a busy and narrow highway through small town America. Small Churches, Town Halls and Shops popped up again and again along the way. Very nice countryside indeed…

The Police Unity Tour Cross Country Team:

<img style="DISPLAY: block; They awoke to clear skies, but that quickly changed. They left Cookesville and the clouds began rolling in. Shane, Pat, Dennis and Kevin admired the darkening clouds from the safety of the Durango while loading up on some java. The riders pedaled up the longest hill of the day (nearly seven miles) and seemed to almost disappear into the low clouds. They realized that their rain gear really was water resistant. They managed to complete their ride and should have the feeling back in their hands by tomorrow afternoon.

Pat, Dennis, Kevin and Rob received the baton from Bruce’s group outside of Rockwood, Tennessee. The rain started to fall as they rode off, so much for staying dry. Their route had the normal big Tennessee hills, deep valleys with green trees, and sharp curves. Later the big storm clouds had passed, but the sky was overcast and the streets remained wet. The sun broke out with 15 miles to go so off came the rain gear and they were pretty well dried out by the end of the ride.

The last group, Craig, Fred, Shane and Steve headed out towards the City of Knoxville under sunny skies and with a Police escort. After passing through the City they picked up a great tail wind and sped towards the end. As they approached the hotel off in the distance the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina could be seen. Fred could be heard saying “it was the nicest ride we’ve had so far.”

We are off to Virginia tomorrow; we’ve traveled almost 2500 miles far…

Here comes Dawn...

Bruce, Nancy and Tony working up hill in the rain...

Dennis, Kevin, Rob and Pat uphill in the rain..

Group 2 starting to come out of the rain...

Steve "Moose" enjoying a downhill with the wind...

Steve, Craig, Shane and Fred "Just Flying"

Group 3 passing the wonderful scenery..

Retired LAPD Capt. The first group (Fred, Craig, Shane and Steve) went out on the road only to find the road we picked turned into a gravel 1.5 miles out. With some creative re-routing (a short ride on I-40 again) we we on our way. Through Hill and Dale they made to the end at a good pace. Jacoby O'Gwinn of the Murfreesburo PD, Tenn rode with this group for quite a while. We picked PD support from Hickman and Williamson County.

The second group (Bruce, Nancy, Tony and Dawn) had a lot of rollers on a slight downhill route into Nashville. In Nashville, we held a brief ceremony at the Police Memorial at the Nashville PD HQ. Attending the ceremony was Chief Ronal Serpas, Capt Andy Garrett and many other Officers. After the ceremony we headed again into rising rolling hills.

Group 3 (Dennis, Patrick, Rob and Kevin) rode as quickly as possible through a series of steep peaks, while traversing S-curve after S-curve. Several locals were quoted as saying, “There some big ole hills to come.” They were facing a late check-in time at the hotel and pedaled like little kids headed for the playground. The scenery was amazing. The tall bright green trees lined the roads and small towns dotted the roadway throughout their route.

Sheriffs from Smith County and Putnam Country helped fend off the local traffic and led the way. There was a ton of traffic considering our remote location. Almost everyone tried to squeeze in a quick nap along the way and yesterday’s rest day seemed long gone. Urban legend has it that tomorrows hills will be some of the steepest that we have seen. Stay tuned....

Fred gearing up
Fred, Shane, Craig and Steve
Craig with a smile...
Capt Andy Garrett with the Nashville Motors, Great job Guys!

Riding through Nashville...
Craig speaking at the Nashville Memorial Ceremony
Heading out of the City
Dennis, Pat, Rob and Kevin traversing the beautiful countryside

Group 3 crossing a river in Tennessee...

Days #17 Hurricane Mills, Tennessee

Well today we finally got a break from riding. The Town of Hurricane Mills, home of Loretta Lynn, is where we are today. It is a nice little town where the people are friendly and the scenery is beautiful. Everyone worked on their bikes, cleaning and oiling them up for the next 7 day stretch of riding. Dennis and Kevin had a visit from Retired Det John Koss and his wife Ann who now reside in Tennessee. Some of us tried to watch the Buffalo Sabres hockey game but unfortunately they aired another game, GO SABRES! Others did some shopping and pretty much everyone took a nap or two. We are all really excited about our up coming arrival in Florham Park, NJ. As a group we have truly bonded to complete our mission and honored to be involved in this worth while endeavor.

NO, we did not run into the"Village People" while in Hurricane Mills but we just wanted everyone to know that to do this Cross Country ride we have to wear different "hats" at times...

Day #16 Memphis, TN to Hurricane Mills, TN

The long and winding road...

We awoke today to 64 degrees and a good chance of heavy rain. The Memphis Motors, 7 in all, arrived at the Hotel bright and early to help us out of the City. They did a great job and took us beyond the City limits and all the way to the County border. The first Group out (Pat, Rob, Dennis and Kevin) headed out of the City with headwinds, crosswinds and rolling hills. Not a bad ride at all.
After their ride Group 1 headed to the Cafe 100 Restaurant, Whitesville, Tennessee for breakfast. It was quite a place, all the patrons knew each other and it was like having a family get together. The food was great, the atmosphere was better. We took a photo in front of the place.
Group #2 (Shane, Steve, Craig and Fred) went out into a pretty good crossing wind and were into rolling hills most of the way. Moose wasn't Happy! They were motivated to speed along to beat the rain. A good ride indeed.
Group #3 (Bruce, Nancy, Tony and Dawn) started off with a very light drizzle. Rolling hills were again in the picture the entire way. Up through the beautiful Tennessee woods they went. Snaking back and forth again and again. When our riders descended the speed was awesome and the views outstanding. They finished with a misty rain at the Hotel.
Today we finished 16 days, 2150 miles, of riding. On one hand we are happy we've come so far, but, on the other hand none of us want this Honorable experience to end.
Tomorrow we rest...no riding...just rest...

<img style="DISPLAY: block; We have a long day today with 170 miles to Memphis PD.

Group #1 (Bruce, Nancy, Tony and Dawn) started out with an escort from the Conway Police Department. The roads along the way were very smooth and towards the end of their ride they ran into a strong headwind for the last 15 miles.

Group #2 (Pat, Rob, Dennis and Kevin) started off and were right into the headwind. For much of the entire ride the headwind persisted. We worked together as Team and the Vans were able to help the riders by blocking the wind in front of them. The team finished the day on a hill.

Group #3 (Fred, Craig, Shane and Steve) started off and then that headwind became a persistent crossing wind. We picked up some Great Motor support from the Arkansas State Police and the West Memphis PD who escorted the riders to the State border with Tennessee. Over the Mississippi River, yes the Mighty Mississippi we went to the awaiting Memphis PD Motors. They gave us an awesome escort to our Hotel.

A largely attended memorial ceremony was conducted at the Memorial Park Funeral Home honoring the Officers killed in the line of duty for Memphis PD (69) and the Shelby Co. Sheriffs Dept. (11). The Memphis Police Sports Federation donated $1,000 to the PoliceUnity Tour and the check was presented to our team by Officer Godfrey Howard. Deputy Director of Police Services Ernest Dobbins was the keynote speaker and inspirational songs were sung by the "Peacemakers", who are members of the MPD. A presentation of the batons was made to the MPD, Shelby Co. Sheriff's Office and the MPD Sports Federation. Family members of several Officers who were killed in the line of duty also attended. The ceremony was concluded with the playing of Taps. The hospitality extended to our team was exceptional, with special thanks going out to MPD Director of Police Services Larry Godwin, MPD Sgt Vince Higgins, Lt. Debbie Jackson, Officer Godfrey Howard and Sheriff Abernathy of the Shelby Co. Sheriff's Office.

Our "Team" with Memphis Motor Officers and 2 Arkansas State Police at the Tennessee Line

Presentation of the Batons at the Memorial Ceremony

Memphis Motor Squad

Nice sign...

Craig, Fred, Shane and Steve crossing the Mighty Mississippi river...

"Thives"?

Dennis, Kevin, Pat and Rob using the Van to break the strong winds..

Tony leads the charge out of Ft. The first group (Craig, Fred, Shane and Steve) headed out on an absolutely beautiful morning in Oklahoma, clear sunny sky’s with little wind. The shades of green in this countryside are stunning. Our entire team then stopped for a photo at the Arkansas border. They finished strong on a hill.

Group 2 (Bruce, Nancy, Tony and Dawn) geared up and rode directly into some very tough hills. Up they went encouraging each along the way. It is at the toughest times like these that all of us recognize what and Honor it is to be doing this ride. The tougher it gets the more worthwhile it seems. We all feel that the one thing we can do, and will do is to never forget our fallen fellow Officers.

Group 3 (Pat, Rob, Dennis and Kevin) started off and the terrain was FLAT, FLAT, FLAT. We really enjoyed a day without any hills to speak of. The weather was perfect with a temp of 65 degrees. We went by some beautiful lakes before any easy climb into Conway.
Upon group 3's arrival at the Conway City line we were met by two of their police cars and a contingent of 6 bicycle patrol Officers who escorted our team to the motel. It is truly inspiring when our brother Officers come out in force to support us in our endevour. We are deeply indebted to them.

At 7:00pm a Memorial Ceremony was held at the Conway Police Department. The event was attended by a large contingent of their bicycle officers, and was conducted by Kevin Hoffman.
The Departmental Chaplain, Rev. George Andrews gave the benediction. Craig White spoke on the mission of the Unity Tour and made the presentation of the baton to Conway Police Major Benny Battles. Dennis read the roll call of heroes and the ceremony was concluded with the playing of Taps. Conway Police Department has lost 3 Officers in the line of duty. After the ceremony a reception was held at the Department with their Officers extending thier hospitality in a most gracious manner. Special thanks go to Pamela Sweeney of the Police Department for all of her hard work in making this ceremony a success.

<img style="DISPLAY: block; OHP Lt. Steve Howell and his guys (Troopers Medeiros, Riddle, Johnson, Gandy, Lanier and Weilert) arrived ‘bout the time the sun start coming up. Y’all get that? That’s Oklahoma for: They arrived at 6:15 am. Do you understand? You can see we are starting to pick up the local accent around here.
Today is our longest ride thus far, 180 miles. The first group (Pat, Rob, Dennis and Kevin) started off at 7:00am and had the cold, wind and hills. Everyone fared well and finished strong.
The second group (Fred, Craig, Steve and Shane) took off and although their group includes at Texan (Fred) the OHP Motors agreed to escort them. Along the way they ran into a 3 mile stretch of very rough road but handled it well. They finished on the top of a good hill. The third group (Bruce, Nancy, Dawn and Tony) took off towards Sallisaw. The route became less hilly, although still challenging. The scenery changed dramatically as we continued east. From the rocky brown tones of the West to the many shades of green seen in the East. We have now passed our halfway point in crossing the country, over 1575 miles down so far.

<img style="DISPLAY: block; The First Group (Bruce, Nancy, Tony and Dawn) started off with a brutal crossing wind, the worst we’ve had thus far. Blowing them at times almost off the road we started to use the vans as wind blockers. We stopped by the Town of Corn for a picture in front of Town Hall.

Group 2 (Rob, Pat, Dennis and Kevin) started off with the winds slightly less but still strong. As they went on hill after hill came up, they really didn’t have any flat areas to speak of. They passed numerous cattle ranches and even saw an Emu that was running across a field towards a Llama. Farther along we saw some Buffalo grazing on another ranch. Scenic but tough…

Group 3 (Fred, Shane, Steve and Craig) started off with a couple of hills before it started to flatten out closer to Oklahoma City. The winds were consistent and strong. Rarely was the wind at their back. Shane said he saw an ostrich chasing a horse?

All the riders want to commend the tremendous job done today by all the OHP Motors. They definitely kept us safe today…

During the evening a ceremony was hosted by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol at their Headquarters Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. A multi-agency honor guard raised the colors and a 21 gun salute was provided by the OHP Honor Guard. The ceremony was conducted by Kevin Hoffman with an invocation by Chaplain Sam Garner. Commissioner of Public Safety Kevin Ward was the keynote speaker. He spoke so fluently and was so well prepared that we are now considering taking him with us to handle all of our public speaking responsibilities. Craig White spoke on the mission of the Unity Tour and he and Bruce Christensen presented the engraved batons to Lonnie Wright, Director of the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Sgt David Baxter of the Oklahoma City Police Dept. Dennis Dempsey did a reading of the names and the ceremony was concluded by the playing of taps by a member of the OHP Honor Guard.

Our evening was concluded with a short visit to the Oklahoma Federal Building Memorial Site.

<img style="DISPLAY: block; Trooper Dave Edwards from the Texas DPS Highway Patrol was again with us in the beginning. The team had a really nice tailwind for much of the ride. They some pretty bumpy road shoulders along the way but they finished their route at a great pace. They had 2 flat tires….
The second group (Bruce, Nancy, Dawn and Tony) began as the wind was truly a strong crossing wind. Working an echelon helped them to cut through it. Tony flatted early in the ride. They rode into some rolling hills as the day got hotter. It seemed like they kept turning left all day into the wind
The last group (Rob, Pat, Dennis and Kevin) was met at the Oklahoma border by Oklahoma State Highway Patrol Motor Lt. Steve Howell, Trooper Clint Riddle, Trooper Jeff Parker and Trooper Donald Kerr. The support given by these Troopers during the ride was awesome and truly appreciated. I have to say they have the coolest Police Motors we’ve ever seen, Suzuki Hybusa 1300 cc rockets! The ride was off the highway and through the countryside. Farm after farm was passed. The winds were at our back at times but the last 10 miles were tough rolling hills with the wind in our faces. The temp when we finished was 91 degrees.

<img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; We traveled to Hereford, Texas to honor the memory of Trooper Matthew D. Myrick, End of Watch 1/20/06. The ceremony was held at the Church of the Nazarene in Hereford and organized by Sgt. Phillip Ditto of the Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Highway Patrol. In attendance were the family members of Trooper Myrick, including his wife Kristy and their 4 children. Also represented were several area Law Enforcement agencies, friends, and the 12 members of the cross country team. The event was conducted by Kevin Hoffman who introduced Pastor Ted Taylor, who gave the invocation. Craig White explained the mission of the Police Unity Tour and presented the engraved baton to Kristy Myrick. Dennis Dempsey read the "Roll call of Hero's" and closing remarks were made by Kevin. Sgt. Ditto then called to attention the uniformed members in attendance and the ceremony was concluded.
FYI, The "Roll call of Hero's" is the reading aloud the name, department, and End of Watch date of each Officer who has been killed in the line of duty. Texas lost 14 Officers in 2005 and 2 more so far in 2006. This is done to honor their memory so that they are not forgotten.
After the ceremony the team chipped in and treated several members of the Highway Patrol and their family members to a superb Mexican lunch.
Dennis Dempsey reads the "Roll Call of Honor"

Craig White presents the Engraved Baton to Kristy Myrick, wife of Trooper Matthew Myrick.

Day#9 Santa Rosa, NM to Amarillo, TX

The "Team" at the Texas Border with our escorts from the Texas Department of Public Safety

Today is our longest day so far, over 170 miles long. Each rider will be burning over 3300 calories during their ride today. Since we are heading into Texas we want to tell a little story of what rider, Fred Fogarty is doing. In 2005 San Antonio Police Officer John Wheeler was killed in a traffic accident. Fred now resides in Texas and decided before leaving that he would dedicate his ride in Honor of Officer Wheeler. Fred is carrying 2 LAPD stuffed bears on the entire ride. Upon arrival in Washington DC Fred is going to present these bears to the family of Officer Wheeler at the Candlelight Vigil.

The first group (Rob, Pat, Dennis and Kevin) started off at 6:45 to a great temp of 48 degrees. Through many grinding hills they went until it gradually became a number of great downhills. They blazed a trail through several construction zones. The wind was getting stronger as we went, but they managed to keep spinning. Kevin brought them to a halt when he experienced his first flat tire on a fast descent. Their overall average pace was extremely fast.

The second group (Fred, Craig and Shane) started off as the wind picked up, changing from a tailwind to a brutal cross wind. Shane felt it was their teams toughest ride so far. The conditions seemed to get the best of him at times as he could be heard reciting random lines from the movie “Anchorman”. At the Texas Border we met up with Trooper David Edwards (Texas DPS) who along with another Trooper got together with our entire Team for a picture. Trooper Edwards then escorted us towards Amarillo. They ended on an uphill with strong winds. Fred had 2 flat tires.

The final group (Bruce, Nancy, Dawn and Tony) began the final 57 mile leg into gusting winds (20 – 30mph). FLAT FLAT FLAT was the scenery of this last leg. We are told that you can see from one side of Texas to the other from here. This group worked as best they could to minimize the effects of the winds. Exhausting as it was they made it to the Hotel in Amarillo.
We have ridden our bikes over 1200 miles during the past 9 days. Tomorrow will be a REST day with no riding. We will be holding a ceremony on Sunday for DPS Trooper Matthew D. Myrick, killed in Jan 2006, and all Texas Officers killed in 2005.

<img style="DISPLAY: block; The first group (Bruce, Nancy, Tony and Dawn) took off and immediately we into hills. A rather long climb through a beautiful canyon got really steep near the peak. They did an admirable job, gutting it out and making it to the long downhill. Along the way a Bernalillo County Sheriff Deputy stopped by to give some support. He showed us the location where Deputy James McGrane Jr. lost his life on March 22nd of this year. He said that his fellow Officers appreciate what our Team is doing .
The second group (Rob, Pat, Dennis and Kevin) headed out to a few pretty good "roller" hills. On one of the downhills a speed of over 46 mph was obtained by the group. It was our shortest ride so far but pretty enjoyable.
The final group (Craig, Fred, Shane and Dawn) took off to a mostly downhill ride. Dawn rode a second time for the day because "Moose" had some trouble with the local water. Along the way they ran into a newly milled shoulder that was bone "jarring" for a while. All in all it was a great day with ideal conditions. 4 more flats for a total of 25 so far.
All the riders especially Tony from the California Highway Patrol want to thank all the Truckers for giving us room along the highway. We appreciate it.
Bruce, Nancy Tony & Dawn on the first climb out of Albuquerque
Same group, hills, hills, & more hills
Rob, busting the wind for Dennis, Kevin & Pat
Clear skys & clear sailing!!!

Rob, Dennis, Kevin & Pat

Group 3 decending a great long down hill....

Dawn, Craig, Shane and Fred working a paceline to perfection...

Day #7 Gallup, NM to Albuquerque, NM

"Moose all bundled up"

Today the morning temp when the first group (Moose, Shane, Craig and Fred) pulled out was in the low 30's. Bundled from head to toe they headed off to a few tough hills early in the ride. Very little shifting was done due to the numbness from cold. They climbed to the Continental Divide at 7250 ft elevation before heading on a long downhill to the finish. Moose and Craig both had flats.
The second group (Bruce, Nancy, Tony and Dawn) started off with the wind at their backs and and really nice downhills. They were motoring! Beautiful scenery was around every corner we went. It had heated up to 70 degrees by noon.

The third group (Rob, Pat, Dennis and Kevin) started off towards Albuquerque about 1:00pm. It was hot and getting hotter. We stop at mile marker 126 to Honor Patrolman Lloyd Aragon , who was killed there in 2001. The Laguna Police Department escorted us for some time along the Interstate 40. We then came upon a very long "9 mile" hill as the locals call it. It was very tough but just over the hill we were met by 8 motorcycles from the Albuquerque PD who escorted us through the city to our hotel, we really appreciated the great job they did. Total flats for the day was 6. Our total flats for the trip is now 21.

At 7:00 pm a Memorial ceremony was held at the Albuquerque PD Foothills station. In attendance were Chief of Police Ray Schultz and Bernalillo Sheriff Darren White. There were also many family members of Officers who were recently killed in the line of duty. After the Honor Guard marched in a bag piper played Amazing Grace. A specially engraved baton was presented to the Chief and the Sheriff. Officer Trish Hoffman read the "Roll call of Honor" of all the Officers who have lost there lives from Albuquerque. Included in this list was Deputy James Mcgrane Jr. was was killed on March 22, 2006. The ceremony was brought to a close with the playing of TAPS. The ceremony was a truly moving experience that, we hope, helped the survivor families attending.

<img style="DISPLAY: block; Well today we had weather for our NY and NJ riders, we awoke to a crisp 32 degrees. The first group(Pat, Rob, Dennis and Kevin) headed out about 6:45am. The roadside on Interstate 40 was pretty good. We had a slight headwind and very gradual uphills. Pat got a flat tire right near the end of his ride.
The second group (Craig, Fred, Moose and Shane) had to wait a few minutes for Shane to recover before heading out. When Shane put on his Chamois Cream, which was stored outside in the 32 degree cold, he apparently suffered "Brain Freeze" and it took him some time to recover. Off they rode on the never ending gradual incline. It warmed to about 65 degrees. They went up to about 5000 ft elevation before turning over to the last group.
The last group today (Bruce, Nancy, Tony and Dawn) started off in the hot, 73 degrees sun. Off towards New Mexico they headed, hitting several good hills along the way. Up past 6000 ft elevation they went, moving at a nice clip. We all stopped at the New Mexico border to take a picture in front of the sign. Dawn got a flat tire just into New Mexico and changed it quickly. As they rode into Gallup, NM is was 75 degrees. Now that's a temp change. Running total of flat tires is 15.

Day #5 Seligman to Winslow, AZ

We checked into the "Bates" Motel, thanks Shane...Dennis decided to wash his shorts and Kevin suggested to hang them on the space heater to dry. Well at 12:30am the smoke alarm woke us up and we found the shorts "Smokin" on the heater. Needless to say "hot pants" Dennis won't do that again.
We all awoke to a balmy 40 degrees clear blue sky day. The first group, Bruce, Nancy, Dawn and Tony rolled out at 6:30am sharp. Well did they ever work, hill after hill appeared and they conquered each one on the road towards Flagstaff. Some of these hills were truly unbelievable. But they climbed up to an elevation of almost 5900 ft before they finished stongly, Great Job guys!
The second group, Dennis, Rob, Pat and Kevin started up from there climbing up to Flagstaff. They crossed the highest point at 7335 ft elevation. With a head wind and more rolling hills they continued on and eventually began heading downhill. At elevation 5000 ft they handed over the Baton to the third group.
The third group, Fred, Shane, Craig and Moose started the long downhill to Winslow. They had the fastest average speed of the trip with a blazing 21.5 mph avg. They really worked well together, pulling each other along. Craig had a flat tire and Tony supervised him changing it, Hah! When they arrived in Winslow it was 68 degrees and Sunny. Only 4 flat tires today....
All in all another great day to Honor our fellow Officers. Along the way we got many words of encouragement from the public.

Day #4 Needles, CA to Seligman, AZ

Today the day started out with a nice 59 degree morning. We, Craig, Dennis, Fred and Kevin headed to Interstate 40 and the ride was not too bad. Slight head wind and a couple of mild hills. We ran into some road construction and Dennis had a slight spill as he rode onto a soft shoulder. A couple of scrapes but he is a-ok! After the morning ride 4 of us headed by car down to Scottsdale Police Department for a 3:00pm ceremony. The Memorial ceremony went very well. Chief Rodbell and Mayor Mary Manross were in attendance along with other local Police Officers. A Bag piper opened up with God Bless America and in marched the Honor Guard. Lt. Frank O'halloran opened with a short speech. After speeches by the Chief, Mayor and Craig White, Craig presented a Specially Engraved Memorial Baton to Chief Rodbell. Dennis Dempsey then read off the names and end of watch of all Officers killed in Arizona in 2005. Included was the Scottsdale Officer, Sgt Hontz, killed in 2002. Special thanks to Frank O'halloran for helping make the event a success.

The second group, Rob, Pat, Shane and Moose started off and soon after went into some pretty long and tough hills. They gutted it out and did a great job. Some long descents were fast but they had quite a bit of debris along the way. Rob's fellow Officer Kate Proscia and Det Berger who were in Kingman, AZ on vacation came out to give support along the way.

Group 3, Bruce, Nancy, Tony and Dawn did very good with last part of the ride. Hills and Quick descents were the order of the day. Bruce and Nancy blew a tire right near the end of the ride, but they are ready for tomorrow morning. Along the way LAPD Sgt Dayrl Belthius and his family spotted us on the Highway and stopped to give support, Greatly Appreciated!

Day #3 Barstow to Needles, California

Today we awoke to a beautiful 52 degree morning in the desert. At 6:30 am the first team, Pat, Rob, Dennis and Kevin departed from the Hotel. We got a little turned around and we were 20 miles en-route before support was able to locate us. The winds were again in our favor, however, we hit the worst 9 mile stretch of road any of us had ever ridden on. After some creative thinking we decided to jump on Interstate 40 (although "technically" we can't do that) and continue the route.
The second team, Bruce, Nancy, Tony and Dawn began their ride from Ludlow, California and moved along at a great pace. They had a few very long but gradual hills and then some really fast, 40 + mph downhills. Tony had flat #2 for the trip.
Group 3, Craig, Moose, Fred and Shane started off in the Hot desert sun. We continued on Interstate 40, busy with Easter Day Traffic. Up a very long (15 mile) and gradual hill they went. When they crested the hill, Steve "Moose" Gottschalk could be heard yelling "Moose like down hill". Unfortunately another hill was ahead...but...they worked hard in UNITY and did it. The way down was a fast jaunt to the Hotel...all in all another great day for those involved.

Day #2 Los Angeles to Barstow, California

Today, April 15th at 7:15 am a radio broadcast was put out to all Los Angeles Police Cars that the Police Unity Tour Cross Country Ride had begun. It was overcast with a slight drizzle as the first riders departed from the LAPD Police Academy. The ride was tough for the riders having to climb out of LA and into the hills. This first group(Craig, Moose, Fred and Shane)of riders toughed it out and got to the next group of riders at about 2500 ft elevation.
The second group (Pat, Rob, Dennis and Kevin) to ride started off with some pretty tough hills, climbed up to 3500 ft elevation, but eventually it became relatively flat and they were aided by a fantastic tail wind. The scenery along the route was stunning. Beautiful desert with the snow covered mountains in the background.
The final group ( Bruce, Nancy, Tony and Dawn) of riders had the same great tail behind them with rolling desert hills. Along the road we had a few flat tires and thanks to our GPS system we stayed on route.
All during the ride we carried the Specially Engraved Memorial Baton that we are taking to Washington DC to deliver to Craig Floyd, Director of the National Law Enforcement Memorial.

Day #1 Venice Beach to LAPD Police Academy

On April 14th we started our ride across America. At 6:30 am the 12 bicycle riders in this event waded into the Pacific Ocean at Venice Beach, California for a ceremonial dipping of our tires in the water. Four weeks from today we plan to do the same thing on the other side of America in the Atlantic Ocean near Washington, DC. Each rider is wearing a bracelet in Rememberance of a fallen Police Officer. From Venice Beach we rode through Downtown LA and then up to the LAPD Police Academy. It is here that the Official send off ceremony was held. In attendance was the Mayor of Los Angeles, Antonio Villaraigosa and Assistant Chief of Police, James McDonald. This moving ceremony also included several families of Officers who recently were killed in the line of duty. Nothing can ever replace them to their family and friends. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial (NLEOM), in Washington, DC allows for their memories to live on and honors these men and women forever. The Police Unity Tour Incorporated was formed in 1997 by a group of law enforcement officers from New Jersey, who rode their bicycles from Florham Park, New Jersey to Washington, DC. The idea of Patrick Montoure, now an Assistant Police Chief from Florham Park, NJ, was to raise donations for the Memorial. Never in his wildest dreams did he envision what this was to become. For the last nine years, police officers nationwide have ridden the 300 plus mile trip, with the purpose of raising awareness and financial support for the NLEOM. The Police Unity Tour has grown from 18 members to nearly 800 members, nationwide, who will be making the trip this year. Because of the Police Unity Tour’s efforts, in nine years $2.2 Million has been donated to the memorial, making the Police Unity Tour Incorporated the single largest supporter of the NLEOM. The goal for the Police Unity Tour is to raise $5 million over the next 4 years. These riders then act as emissaries of the Memorial by greeting and escorting the surviving family members at the annual Candlelight Vigil in Washington.

This year, 3 Officers got together and decided that they would like to carry forward the dream of Pat Montoure and do something extraordinary. These 3 Officers recruited an additional 9 Officers willing to donate their time and efforts to accomplish something difficult yet very special. This dream will become a reality on April 15th when these 12 Officers leave Los Angeles en-route to Ground Zero in NYC, riding their bicycles in Honor of all Police Officers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Carried during this ride will be a Specially engraved memorial police baton honoring the Officers.
Upon arrival in Washington, DC on May 12th this baton will be presented to Craig Floyd, Director of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. In their effort to raise awareness, coast to coast, they will be holding a memorial service in each State they pass through. During these services, they will present an identical memorial baton to the State / Local Police Department hosting the ceremony. Their goal in this endeavor is to raise at least $1000 in each State they ride through. The money they raise will all go to the NLEOM. They welcome, and encourage, any members of the Law enforcement community to ride with them as they travel through your State.
